The Cincinnati Bengals have announced today that coach Hue Jackson will assume a new role with the team.
In his second stint with the Bengals, he will serve as a special assistant and coach the Bengals running backs. As a successful assistant coach, head coach, mentor, and good citizen, this Examiner recognizes coach Hue Jackson’s contributions to the NFL for Black History Month.
After his first stint with the Bengals, he attracted the attention of Al Davis, owner of the Oakland Raiders. They brought him in as the offensive coordinator and then promoted him to head coach.
In Jackson's lone season as the Raiders head coach, they finished in a three-way tie (8 wins) for first place with the Broncos and Chargers. The Raiders rewarded him by firing him. Unfortunately, the Raiders didn’t give Jackson a fair shot at the job. Few coaches, if any, could have turned the 2010 Raiders into Super Bowl contenders.
Anyone remember Jimmy Johnson, former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in the 90s? In his first season with Dallas, he finished 1-15. Although he only won one game, he managed to win 2 Super Bowls as their head coach. Had Dallas owner Jerry Jones fired Johnson after only one season, Dallas may be short a few Super Bowl rings. Not only does Jackson have experience as a successful offensive coach, he also has experience in the college coaching ranks. Credit Bengals owner Mike Brown and coach Marvin Lewis for bringing Jackson back to Cincinnati.
In Jackson’s two seasons with the Raiders, his running game finished second (2010) and seventh (2011) in the league. Jackson has also coached for the Washington Redskins and Atlanta Falcons.
He also helped former Bengals Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh become two of the most successful Bengals receivers.
Bengals fans can expect the Bengals 2013 rushing game to improve under Jackson’s tutelage. Somewhere down the road, Hue Jackson should get another chance as a head coach.
