Darius Slay available via trade!

Postby piratepride » Mon Feb 17, 2020 2:12 pm

Reports are Detroit is looking to unload Slay for the right price. He'll be a free agent this time next year, and the Lions may be revealing their intentions to draft Okudah at #3.
What's a guy like him going to cost?
I'm sure they'll be looking for a #2 and a player, but think they're willing to accept a third rounder?
If so we'll have our #1 lockdown corner opposite of Trayvon Mullen.

I don't think it's necessary bro, because I think Byron Jones is going to hit the open market. Why cough up a pick and a player AND a shitload of money when all we really need to do is cough up the money for a badass like Jones? Slay is 29, Jones 27.

No wayn can DAL afford to keep Cooper, Dak AND Jones.

There will be some solid options out there for us.

I'll admit i don't know much about Byron Jones, is he a top 5 corner?I'm over getting the Breshad Breeland's of the world, we need a solid #1. Did he make the pro bowl this year?
If we land Chris Jones, our CB rotation may not matter as much.
Reports coming out saying he'll hold out for a new deal even if they tag him. Chiefs have been notoriously cheap when it comes to paying players, they're under the gun with the Mahomes situation.

I tend to take this stuff w a grain of salt, but...

This past season, Byron Jones ranked #14 CB by PFF, Darius Slay ranked #83.

Byron Jones played about 100 more total snaps and has pass rush talent that Slay does not.

Jones doesn't have some of the INT and PD stats Slay has because he had one of those Nnamdi seasons - nobody wanted to throw at him. Because last season he was in the Pro Bowl with 14 PDs, 2 TFLs, 67 tackles.

In the last 4 years, Slay has played all 16 games once. Jones has done it 3 times.

Byron Jones likely to hit free agency with Cowboys focused on Prescott, Cooper
Posted by Charean Williams on February 24, 2020, 10:02 PM EST

The Cowboys have plenty of salary cap room, but most will go to two players. Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper aren’t going to leave the team with much leftover money.

That’s the reality.

“We’re going to have some challenges with our [salary] cap,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “We are. Certainly, it’s Dak and Amari that are going to shrink it in a hurry. We’re going to have challenges, but they’re not challenges that we can’t overcome.”

The Cowboys have 25 players scheduled to become unrestricted free agents. Cornerback Byron Jones is rated 13th on PFT’s top-100 list of free agents but expected to hit the market.

The Cowboys appear resigned to the fact they won’t be able to keep him.

“Byron is a guy we think a lot of,” Stephen Jones said. “He’s had a great run at corner. He’s played really well, played at a high level. That’s the hard thing when you have quite a few good players on your football team is you get challenges. Byron understands that. But at the same time, he’s worried about Byron, as he should be. Certainly, we’ll visit with his guys while we’re here. Kinda see their direction, what they’re thinking. And we’ll have to keep moving.”

The Cowboys drafted Byron Jones in the first round of 2015, and he spent most of his first three seasons at safety before switching to cornerback full time.

He has two interceptions in 79 career NFL games and none in the past 40 starts, but Jones still is going to get somewhere in the $15 million per year range.

Mayock spoke to the media today and mentioned wanting to collect playmakers on defense. He's definitely a playmaker, wonder 8f he'll command top 5 corner $$$??
Either way would love to have him.
Looks like Vontez Burfict is re learning the new rules to conform to the league's standards. Thinks he's worth another shot while having a backup plan?
Or is he no longer worth a roster spot? Dude was actually pretty decent last year, opposing offensive players knew where he was at all times.

I really don't think the Browns are going to want to pay Schobert. I think Joe is going to get something like $14M/yr.

Andrew Berry: Joe Schobert has earned right to test market
Posted by Josh Alper on February 26, 2020, 6:16 AM EST

Linebacker Joe Schobert said earlier this month that he’d like to remain with the Browns in 2020, but added that “you never know” how things are going to go in free agency.

Browns General Manager Andrew Berry was asked about Schobert’s future with the team on Tuesday. Berry’s answer didn’t close any doors ahead of a planned meeting with Schobert’s representatives this week, but it also didn’t set the stage for the Browns overwhelming him with an offer to stay.

“He’s obviously earned the right to test the market if he deems that appropriate,” Berry said, via Cleveland.com. “But it’s one of those situations where we like Joe. It obviously has to work for both sides. It has to work for us from a cost perspective with our long-term roster strategy, and obviously it has to be a fit for Joe and his family as well.”

Berry also addressed defensive end Olivier Vernon‘s status. Berry said Vernon “didn’t have the year that he’d hoped this past season” and that they’ll “work through” how they’ll move forward with a player set to make a non-guaranteed salary of $15.25 million.

PFF has Byron Jones ranked as the 9th best available free agent this offseason.

9. CB BYRON JONES

A move to cornerback rejuvenated Jones’ career in 2018, as he showed that he could play single coverage on the outside at a high level. He finished with the 14th-best coverage grade among corners in 2018 (80.4) before dropping to 21st in 2019 (74.8), but those are extremely valuable numbers as he hits the open market. Many will point to Jones not picking off a pass over the last two years, but his 74.1 coverage grade in single coverage is 11th-best during that time, and he has also shown the ability to match up against tight ends when called upon. Jones brings youth and coverage ability to the open market, making him the top defensive free agent heading into the offseason.
